Hi Gary,Gary Swiech wrote:Excellent example of the broom shaped Zelkova Marcus!
Can I ask about it's past? Was it an import when you first got it and how long has it been in your training?
It really does convey the expression of a of the Zelkova.
oh yes it is a japanese tree. It was selected summer 2012 from the nursery of M. Kimura by a friend of mine Doug while he was on a buying trip.
The tree arrived in the UK Jan 2013 when I went to visit it in QT . The tree was cleared to collect at the end of April so I drove the 1200 mile round trip as quickly as I could ! Moving the tree to our milder location caused a growth explosion and by May I was taking cuttings and have been pruning extensions ever since. The original outline was quite irregular so I allowed some areas to fill before defoliating, as the timeline pics below show.
Far more leaves were the result of the new flush of growth so last week the tree was thinned quite hard - all upper shoots were reduced to one leaf and all lower shoots were cut back to 2 leaves. now I can see light through all the tree. Winter is the time for this one to really shine although autumn could be nice for a week or so too.

Walter
Magnificent tree!
Of course you have crafted many magnificent trees over the years and as a regular visitor to your blog and web site I'm familiar with some of them. This Beech however is a personal favourite.
Thanks for sharing it with the forum.
Regards
Richard

I would be interested in the sizes of these two lovely Fagus Walter.

Its a very old thread, but this has been one of my all time favourite threads on the IBC, ive often looked to this thread for inspiration, ideas, insight and to admire the fantastic trees since starting my bonsai journey nearly 4 years now, I feel that now i'd like to add a few brooms of my own to this great thread

In fact, i think a lot of people don't know that there IS formel and not formel hokidachi style , because there is a lot of photographies of zelkova serrata coming from japan , is the unformel style booked from europe?

Re: Clean Sweep - Show Us Your Brooms
Thanks for once again reviving this thread!
Love the trees, especially that recumbent Elm which of course I recognise from your previous posts but also the second Hornbeam which I don't think I've seen before (although that might be because I was asleep at the back of the class ).
All very nice though.
Cheers
Richard

I've been looking for a Formal Broom in nature that's not a 'yard tree'. Do they exist?

Re: Clean Sweep - Show Us Your Brooms
Of course they do, I can see several good examples when driving to work.
It's dark now, and we're going to have several rainy days now, but I'm sure that some members can post photos.

The first two look informal, but I must accept the other two.
I myself do see full-scale formal brooms, but they are all in yards, not wild trees.

Re: Clean Sweep - Show Us Your Brooms
I found one! It is at the edge of a residential yard, but it hasn't been groomed or trimmed extensively.

Re: Clean Sweep - Show Us Your Brooms
So, perhaps you could take some photos and post them here
