Hello. I recently bought a Japanese White Pine. I loved the trunk and the disposition of the branches from the first moment I saw it. However it has been going to some rough times so it is not as green as it should. Is there anything I can do to keep helping him to get better faster? Or should I just be patient and keep taking care of it? It has new buds growing so I am happy =). Thank you for your help.

Problems with the roots due to improper watering.

How long have you had it? That is one sick white pine. It is a very small pot and there is a lot of moss suggesting it has been too wet. The white pine does not like being wet, keep in the sun and only water when it is quite dry. How often will depend on your conditions. However if you have only just got it I would be demanding my money back.

Is it just the way I am looking at this tree, or does it look to anyone else as it there is little root flare? It is giving me the impression of an air layer that has been taken off the mother tree and potted up too soon. As I say, this might just be my interpretation of the pics that I am trying to look at on a small screen.

I think Geoff and Fiona are both right. What would I do if I was mine? Well, if I wasn't going to return it to the seller id take it out of the pot it's in, remove surface Moss and and large lumps of any gooey soil an put it in a larger pot. I'd put a few inches of raw gravel in the pot for it to sit on and a gravel and cat litter / akadama mix around the existing root ball and also on top of it to a depth of about half to one inch, give it a single watering of Canna cannazyme and rhizotonic and leave it and not water it until the existing root ball felt like it needed it. It may be tricky if you are in Barcelona as it gets very hot there from here through summer but that may not be something you are able to do much about apart from trying to keep it out it out if the most harsh sun. I'd leave it for the rest of this year to see how it goes but if it starts to look like it's recovering it could do with a feed la summer/early autumn. By the way - I would also remove wiring and check to see if there is any wire wrapped around the trunk at or below soil level in case it has been layered and someone has forgotten to remove any wire or tap etc used in the layering process.

Hope this may help, let us know what you do and how thing progress.
