Re: First bonsai help needed
Meanwhile the part I chopped of from the main trunk had no roots...but I managed to root it and after several cuts this is how it looks now.
Thank you for all the help and putting me on the right truck. Without you I would not have done it.
Here are some virtuals I made...but it might be none of them...I want something more unusual and funky...have some plans

Hello, Nelli!
If affirmative, how do you expect them to fatten up if you do not let them grow free?
I am a beginner too, I remind you...
Don't you think that the branches are not proportional to trunk girth?Neli wrote:

Re: First bonsai help needed
The lower branches are thick...it just that one is hidden by thee leafs...Look at the offcuts...The branch has more than 1"diameter, just that it is flat a bit...and I did not post the front well....I think that should be OK for thickness now. Later it might grow again...
I can still thicken them with sacrifice branches...if needed...but trust me they are thick.
Maybe they should be thicker???

Neli,
Nice work on those Bougainvillea. You have come quite a ways in a short amount of time of your interest in Bonsai.
Thanks,
David

Re: First bonsai help needed
Thank You david! You made my day!
I read 14 -18 hours a day some times...everything that is found on bonsai...and I have finished all the bonsai material in every single nursery around...Bought them all Over 1000 trees (probably more) and started growing from cuttings many. Most are in the ground, in the new plot dedicated to bonsai.
Bought plants from abroad, and I am arranging some from Japan too...soon they will be here. Gone totally mad over bonsai...it saved my life and sanity.
Trying to start a club to share the joy of the hobby.
Started a Japanese garden infront of the new pond, which is not finished yet.
Made some shelves for the future bonsai... and trying to landscape it all.
My old pond and garden are informal...this plot is next door...and wanted every thing formal here.

Darling I am sure you have everything there and much more. I bring most of my plants from abroad. I bring one each and propagate many from them.leatherback wrote:sigh.. such growth you get there..

Maybe the things from the bush...that are not cultivated. I have been digging every month 3-4 trees. My friends were telling me...dont dig now it is not the time...the trees will die..I still dug them and they are almost all alive...at list now I know I can dig any time.
Even cut off huge branches...some like 30cm diameter...just huge cuttings and they are growing also. I found some eally cute trees with tiny leafs, but only God know what are they.
You have much more cultivated varieties there, so dont fret.

Memories
I found this thread by accident today.
How many wonderful memories are here.
I see all the people that helped me and want to say thank you again. Such lovely kind people.
I was so hard when I started, combined with the fact that there is no one doing bonsai here, you have put me on the right truck.
Meanwhile I have learned a bit more and even went to Japan twice to see a real bonsai and did some apprenticeship at Taisho en, because some things need to be seen to learn them and understand them better. I tried to concentrate there on pines and junipers only since that was the hardest to understand for me.
I have cooled down also and not so impatient any more. I think what helped is that I have so many trees now that it is hard to overtrim them, since there is not enough time in a day to do that.
Meanwhile I have realized what is important for me in developing a tree. Good movement and taper in the branches and trunk is number 1.
So as I learned more I cut back the branches that were to long, not well directed, and had no taper, and restarted the growing process.
Left also 3 sacrifice branches ro heal the large scar where I removed the big second trunk.
It has healed the scar which was 5cm diameter half way so far.
This is how it looked Sept 2014.
Slowly getting there I did some wiring but it is mostly clip and grow while using some pegs also to give initial direction to young branches.
Some of the smaller 1'' scars are healed

Re: First bonsai help needed
The low trunk I chopped from it rooted well but had some big cracks in the trunk on top so I had to carve it recently and still needs more carving on top.
March 2013
This was May 2013 after chopping the branches.
This is how it looked last year. Mean while I chopped the bottom left branch since it was just too hard to bend meanwhile and want to give it a more downwards direction. I guess I am now trying to develop my own identity as far as styling is concerned.

Re: First bonsai help needed
And this is my miserable variegated ficus benjamina which was the first tree I bought for bonsai.
Before 2012
and after 4 trunk chops in the first year it is now around 30 cm high
2013
and 20 14. I put a collar in the trunk after puncturing it to develop some roots to enlarge the trunk and create more taper.
