Twin Trunk Bald Cypress - Page 3 Empty thread grafting on bald cypress

Post  andre10 Wed Nov 10, 2010 9:11 pm

Is there any success stories here with thread grafting a branch on a bald cypress. I'm lacking a back branch and in two years the tree is just not giving me one. Please post reply or email me at andre.10@mtn.blackberry.com

Hi Andre,
I tried to do a thread graft on a bald cypress once and it did not take. As it turned out the problem was that the area where I wanted to graft the branch was dead under the bark.
I think that it should work if there is live tissue in that area. I have seen trunks and branches on bald cypress that have grown together in the wild.
You may also try to use a seedling in a pot to graft on a branch.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out if you try this.

Thanks Ken I'm new to blogging and the whole internet forum thing so as soon as I figure out how to upload and post pictures I will gladly post some of my trees and future prodjects. I'm new at bonsai but eager to learn and attend lots of workshops and lectures here in South Africa.

Ken, did you end up taking this to Asheville? I didn't think I saw it there. AMAZING work. Great vision and execution. Did you have a drain hole at the bottom?

Great work. Keep it up
Have a great week

Hi Sam,
It was at the Expo last year.
There is a hole at the bottom it is about 3 to 4 inches in diameter.
Thank You for your kind remarks.

How does the tree look from the other angle? how does it heel over such a big cut? just curious

Hi matievski,
I do not know if the cut will heal over in my life time but it has started to heal with about a half inch of callous that has rolled over the edge of the cut.

Very interesting pictures! Thanks!
Did you ever consider to try grafting piece of bark matching the split open part so it heals up completely? I know it is a very precise procedure and it got to be done very quickly but it is possible to cover it up.
I did such a grafting of lemon core on orange tree where I cut dryed branches leaving huge cuts on the trunk:

Couple years later resulting this:

Or may be use Keiki Grow ointment and multiple long cuts till they heal up? ever tried this?

The after photo did not load on my Mac. Did anyone else see it? I would really like to see the end results so if the photo viewing problem isn't on my end would you please reload it. Thanks.

As for having the whole side of the tree that has been hollowed out callousing over, I doubt it ever will. I collected a similar tree that nature itself had hollowed and the callouss grew for probably 30 to 50 years. This tree was probably close to 200 years old. The callous grew large but never covered the wound. It made the tree look older. The tree now resides in a friend's collection as I gave it to him.

Ken, what an awesome tree! I may try this on one of my big trees once it regains its strength next year or Spring of 2016. I will need to practice my carving.

Thank You Sikadelic.
I plan on working on this tree this weekend, it needs to be pruned and wired.
How are your new BC's doing?
