Burning roots the how and why Empty Burning roots the how and why

Post  Fuzzy Sat Feb 20, 2010 1:03 pm

Ok I understand the fact that an overly concentrated dose of plant food will cause reverse osmosis in a plants roots = BAD, But I was wondering why and how feeding a recently potted tree with a diluted feed would result in a possible adverse effect? I’m curious to know the reason for not feeding for four to six weeks after potting. Anyone know the in depth reason?
Thanks Smile

Read this article. It's lengthy, but it contains just about all you need to know about fertilizer:

Yes! I've had that tattooed on the backside of my eyeballs for years.

I dunno why people insist on making the horticulture of bonsai twice as complex as it needs to be.

Thanks, Brent -- and welcome back.

After reading that very interesting article by Brent and after digesting the very logical argument it makes for feeding full strength fertilizer to newly potted trees, and if I read it right newly collected yamadori. Hands up all those who follow this wisdom. Don’t be shy stick yer hands up! bounce

As for me I plan to try this on ONE of my newly collected Elms (Gulps nervously). affraid cheers

No need to gulp, nervously or otherwise. The half strength or no fertilizer after root work is and always was sheer blather -- up there with superthrive (B-1), water drops burning leaves, and drainage layers.

Besides, take a look at Brent's Evergreen Gardenworks pages; he has created the long-overdue rewrite of the book on the horticulture of bonsai.

Maybe some Japanese bon-pundit, back in the dark ages of bonsai, failed to read the "hot" label under the chicken coop and used some un-cured chicken manure on his newly potted trees.

Cheers Jim
The original question occurred to me whilst out walking my dogs and thinking bonsai as you do. I’ve always followed the conventional wisdom of no feed after potting and so on with obvious success = no dead trees, but the question arose as to why feeding a freshly potted tree would/ could result in potentially harming the tree, after all a root is a root is a root right? Hence the question and the very interesting answer. Though I’ll stick to one recently collected Elm for now and check the results. Very Happy
