Has this horrible thing ever happen to your trees?
I have an azalea in a training pot and i kept it outside. I come to check it out a day later and it REAKS! of cat piss. What to dooo
the soil smells and the flowers too, i don't care much about the flowers because i'm cutting them off anyway. Is there any way to deter cats away?
p.s. will this affect my azalea in a negative way? im cutting the flowers as im typing, i cleaned it with water a lil and still smells sooo bad T_T gonna take two showers after this.

I'd run a lot of water through it.

Has this ever happened to you?
Can you find out whose cat it is? Cats should be kept indoors.
Easiest solution is to get an old cage & keep your plant in it.

I put hardware cloth over the soil, kept my 2 cats out of it as well as squirrels from digging. I lost 2 trees to cat pee and I tried rinsing the soil many times for one and rinsing the roots off of one and repotting it. Both died, good luck. Cat urine is between 6.0 and 6.4 in a healthy cat but is very concentrated.

A good pellet or bb gun works.

I can't say that I have ever had this problem. However, were you to grow your azaleas in Turface MVP (or similar material), most of the pee would run right though and the residual likely would be a good nitrogen fertilizer. Urea is a good nitrogen source but is too "hot". You can run water through Turface to your heart's content and so accomplish anything from diluting the urea to routinely washing it and its smell away completely without any "overwatering" of your azalea.
Please note that I am not trying to sell Turface MVP. I am only suggesting that switching to a material with similar basic properties for your bonsai soil might solve this problem as well as give you some other benefits.

haha, if you were typing and cutting flowers at the same time your computer will smell too
IO think it is a male tom cat 'spraying' to mark territory that smells very strong rather than a cat having a pee. loads of products are reported to deter cats - if it becomes a regular problem

My cat just LOVES my olives...she wants to roll herself in them....I placed theese trees on a stand. That does the trick

Animals can be difficult, esp. when they are not yours! I hope you can wash out that cat urine!
In fact, just last night, I busted my German Shepherd dog jumping up a good 3' to eat the Turface and organic cakes! I couldn't believe it! Now I too like David am going to have to put hardware wiring over the trees on pedestals! Darn animals!

Get a dog. If that isnt practical, find a dog groomer and get some dog hair and put it near your trees. The smell might just keep the "fragrant feline" away, like putting human hair where deer graze on landscape plants and veggies.

Thank you everyone =] i will definitely try all these, to putting the plant on a high pedestal where a cat can't reach to putting dog hair on it.

I had the same problem and tried everything I knew then I got a few mouse traps to put around my trees . My cat will not even come close to my benches any more nor will the local squirerls.

I disagree on this very strongly, no creature should be kept indoors if it doesn't chose to do so, just like your trees. If it were birds pooping on your trees you wouldn't want to put all the birds in cages too would you.bonsaisr wrote:Cats should be kept indoors.
This aside, if you live in the middle of a city than you shouldn't have your pet be a bother to others, this also goes for all the dog lovers who's poo lovingly fills the crevices of my soles on a regular basis. Sadly the cat's owner probably doesn't read your topic.
Ontopic; unions and coffee slurry works miracles on cats, they absolutely resent the smell.

Imagine someone doing the same on your pets or trees!?Bob Pressler wrote:A good pellet or bb gun works.
I'm amazed a lover of nature and trees can show such sadism towards animals...

I had an easier solution than hardware cloth, nylon bird netting. Much easier to fit to a pot and can be tacked down with roofing nails.
