The Bonsai Society of Upstate NY 39th Exhibition
Well, it probably is not my place to do this, but I am soooo looking forward to this show in May and while spending a gloomy Sunday afternoon on line reading Bonsai stuff that I can't resist...(apologies in advance to any toes I am stepping on... )
I am new to Bonsai and I am a member of the Bonsai Society of UNY. I would like to meet lots of you in person next month. It will be years before I have anything "Bonsai real" of my own, but nothing can stop me from enjoying all of yours today
So if you are not too far from us...See you next month. And then you can also go to Bill Valavanis' place too, another awesome Rochester product (By appointment Only I believe...)
Here are some real nice pictures from the show last year.

I am not 100% sure (another reason I should not be doing this perhaps) but the Buffalo guys come to Rochester in May too...
http://bonsaiinbuffalo.com/
The show is in May on May 19th and 20th, 2012.
The caveat here is that if anyone from the Rochester or Buffalo clubs objects this post by me, I will ask to have it removed. I am just too excited about it...May 19th can't come fast enough!!!...

On Bill's 2012 Seedling catalog he lists those dates (May 19th & 20th) as his "Spring open house and sale" dates at the Arboretum. Do we have two separate events to look forward to on that same weekend?

BSUNY Show
I always look forward to meeting IBC buddies. I'm easy to spot.
Bill always has his spring open house the same weekend as the show, this year May 19-20. Unless I arrive very early, I try to go to the open house first, since the open house ends at 4 & the show ends at 5. There are always folks from Buffalo at Rochester events.
This year the Buffalo show is the week before.
May 12-13 — Buffalo Bonsai Society annual show. Buffalo-Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 S. Park Ave., Buffalo. info@buffalobonsaisociety.com. Go to: http://www.buffalobonsaisociety.com/index.html or phone 716-880-7441.
I hope I can get to it, because I get the impression their quality is soaring. If you go, be sure to see the giant Ficus banyan bonsai in the botanical garden.

Yes Jay, same weekend. I guess that weekend is not by appointment only since it is the open house weekend.
Thank you Iris. I think I am going to make a weekend in Buffalo now with the Botanical Garden visit. I did not know BSUNY had a show the weekend before Rochester.

Thanks for mentioning the http://BonsaiInBuffalo.com site. I will make a video of the BSUNY show and try to get it on the site ASAP so that everyone that cannot attend will, at least, get a brief sample!

BSUNY is Bonsai Society of Upstate NY, the Rochester club. Their show is May 19-20. The Buffalo Bonsai Society show is the week before.DenisL wrote: I did not know BSUNY had a show the weekend before Rochester.

Looking over BBS website this afternoon I am continually running into mention of their show being on the 19th and 20th of May same as BSUNY. Could someone clear up the confusion or are they both on the same day.

Yes Jay, the Buffalo show is the same weekend as the Rochester show. Im sure. I was going to try to show the azalea that i got last year at the rochester show, but im an officer in the Buffalo club so i will have to be there and help. We were pretty upset when we figured out that they were the same days. Needless to say this will not happen next year. Its not good for either club especially for the buffalo club as we dont get the turn out like the Rochester show. Plus alot of our members LOVE to go see the amazing trees that they have. You still going to be at the National show? The wife and i might get a hotel so we dont have to drive back and forth, also not miss a thing. Hope all is well.

Now that's some bad planning. Some of those officers should be fired!

Thank you for the clarification Neil, its unfortunate timing to be sure. I will be at the nationals both days. I Look forward to seeing you again.

How strange! For the past few months, the Buffalo web site announced that their show was May 12-13. This must have been a recent change. Perhaps they couldn't help it.

Iris- Yes i dont want to toot my own horn but i just happen to notice it the other day and it just so happen we had a board meeting that night. I had to tell the president (Wendy W.) which in turn notified Vince P. (who does a great job with our website) and fixed it.
Chris- I agree that at least i should be fired from the board, It has been real hard to give the club 100% when the wife and i are in the middle of buying a house and both our jobs have been pretty demanding also this past year. But when elections came up this year we did not have ANY people that wanted to step up. So all 4 of us (breaking parts of our bonsai constitution) are serving another year. But i hope you were just kidding
Jay-Just got some good news, i talked to Bill V. today and he needed a few more people to help with the National show. So it looks like im gonna have to do some work while we are there for the weekend. Maybe you will be able to help me keep an eye out for a shohin or smaller sized white or black pine, cause im gonna be on the hunt with all those good venders that are gonna be there.

Talk to Michael levin at Bonsai West (you can shoot him an e-mail) as they just got a mighty shipment of pines in and I believe he's planning on bringing some with him. As I remember Bill listed Ryan Neil as a vendor as well, between just those two alone I 'm sure you'll have some luck finding what you want. I don't do conifers (except one spruce and one larch) so you'll have no competition from me.

Of course I'm kidding (admittedly that can be difficult to convey in this format...sorry for any misunderstanding). Considering what you're dealing with, others in the club should step up and take some responsibility. I see this all the time in the clubs I've been part of (not speaking of BSUNY, which I've only recently joined - other clubs) - no one wants to volunteer and the same people get stuck being president, treasurer, board, etc.
I guess you won't be at the BSUNY show - hope the Buffalo show goes well! See you at the national...
