(Crataegus monogyna) Common Hawthorn No.1
I took this very old hawthorn stump home 3 years ago after it was torn from the ground by a Landrover that reversed into it. Completely out the ground apart from a thin root that I teased from the ground. Just re-potted at a more suitable angle. Incredibly heavy. Had to drag it across the garden after it flattened my wheelbarrow. Still not much to look at and a lot of carving work to be done but at its new angle it is possible to see a future. Again on a daily dose of Rhizotonic.
Thanks Sam

With a decent amount of work, i bet you could make it a masterpiece.

Hi Sam, I'm glad to see a chunker like that, I have one that size that needs to be removed from an area I'm building my pond in. Was this a stump or did you cut it after it was knocked over? Those LandRovers are tough rigs . I'm going to chop and dig mine out after the full moon passes. Thanks for sharing, I have renewed confidence in my tree. Rick

Hi Rick, I only cleaned the cut up as the LandRover had made a real mess of the trunk above that point. With such a big trunk it might have been nice to have a little more height but it was imposable to see how the trunk formation was before it was hit. Hopefully be able to turn it into something nice. Good luck with yours.

Thank you Sam, I've been eyeballing mine for two years now while I cleared and prepared the pond area. Now it's time for it to go so I can dig the pond itself. I'm going to give it about a 24" stump to start with and work it down to about 18" trunk. Hey Sam, have you ever eaten the haws. They are not only delicious, but also work to dilate the vessels in the heart, gives you a flush as blood rushes through and more oxygen is delivered to the brain. I eat them by the handful and we collect and dry them for later use. Just one of the many reasons for my love affair with hawthorn. Rick
