My bonsai - question Empty My bonsai - question

Post  elijah23 Mon Jan 02, 2012 2:33 pm

Hi. I'm new here and I have a question. Lately I've "inherited" an old bonsai but it was in a bad shape. I let it grow for a while. Now I want to start forming it but I haven't got and idea for this tree. I'm open for any suggestion what to do with it. Here are some pics of this tree.

OK, for now, do nothing but water and keep warm.

This looks like Ficus microcarpa imported from China.

When the weather will be warm for some months, repot it in good soil, put it outside and cut it back.

This a very hardy species for Bonsai, but it has suffered from being indoors in a cold climate.

You should give it as much light as possible until it gets warm and fertilize regularly. You can definitely do some trimming of the long branches back to 2 or 3 leaves, but I would avoid wiring and major cutting until it recovers from repotting. When you move it outside (ideally no temperatures below 40F, 5C) give it some shade for the first couple of weeks to avoid sunburn and leaf drop.
