Thanks John. These were a gift, but Brent at Evergreen Garden Works has a nice selection of them.

Fall Color on a Little Seiju
Ulmus parvifolia 'Seiju' is a sport of 'Hokkaido' which turned up in 1976 in California. The leaves are small to tiny, depending on the size of the tree & pot. It is a tad bigger than 'Hokkaido,' but less finicky. It is extremely popular in the US. It is not sold in general nurseries, only in Bonsai nurseries. If you can't find it in West Virginia, many of the mail-order bonsai sellers carry it. I bet you could find it on eBay.
I'm surprised if it hasn't reached Europe by now. I bet one of the British nurseries has it.

From Wikipedia:
The tree is commercially available in the USA and Australia where it is popular as a bonsai subject.[3] The tree was also listed in the UK until 2002.

I wonder why it is no longer available in UK. Strange.

Re: Fall color on a little Seiju
Very nice Seuji Elm.
I would like to grow this species of Chinese elm again. I had one about 30 some years ago when I was still learning the basics of Bonsai.
It died, probably from over watering and not having the right soil mixture etc. Beginners loss.
I'm growing Ulmus parvifolia "Allee" now. The bark and roots of "Alee" begin to flake off at 1" caliper.
Grows kind of like an American Elm in shape.

I think I'll plant this one in the ground next Spring to gain in trunk size, and get that coloring going faster.
