preparing a tree for collection- weakening before winter? Empty preparing a tree for collection- weakening before winter?

Post  Boomer145 Fri Aug 12, 2011 1:17 pm

I have read some posts regarding the prepping of prospective trees to be collected and understand the intent is to develop a more compact root ball/finer root hairs. I have a number of trees to collect in spring and considered doing this for the maples, oaks and Malus but with the onset of winter a few months away (ground freezes in November here in northern Ontario), is this practice potentially counter-productive with not a huge amt of time left to grow and consolidate root mass? Interested to hear your thoughts...
thanks
Jon
