Re: Berberis cascade styling
Nice Berberis, but in my opinion the cascading branch is way to straight for a convincing cascade.
I get the feeling like the tree is forced to be a cascade.
Nice docu.though.
Kind regards
Peter

Hi Peter, the straight branch is for now a weak part in the tree.
But in the next couple off years this part you won't see anymore, when the leafs on this tree are more matured.
I will show you next year, and than you know what i mean.
Greetings Ed

Re: Berberis cascade styling
Here a photo from the berberis in his new pot,and the back off the tree is now the new chosen front
I discus this tree with Teunis Jan klein, and he advised me to nominate the back as the new front.
And the pot also comes from Deshima bonsai, the bonsai-shop from Teunis Jan
In the top off the tree I want more growth and in the lower part there must grow some new branches to get a better end-result
I hope you like it so far
Greetings Ed

I like the repeating theme of the rocks, echoing the back part of the 'trunk' - really appeals to the eyeEd van der Reek wrote:Here a photo from the berberis in his new pot,and the back off the tree is now the new chosen front

Re: Berberis cascade styling
Hi Ed,
great job! I like it very much. Especially now, after I dug 1 berberis myself.
Where did you get this tree? What is your experience with wiring it, after what time branches keep their new shape?
Regards,
Martin

Hi Gordon,I am glad you like my idea from the repeating theme off the rocks
And Martin,I get the berberis also from Deshima bonsaishop from Teunis Jan Klein.
I wire the branches in April, and the branches keep their new shape in 2 months

Re: Berberis cascade styling
Well done.
The nice bark structure make it look really old.
Sorry bud I can't stop looking at the tree on the background.
The one with lot off dead wood..
Maybe a picture one day?
Greetings,
Cees.

Hi Pavel and Lele, thanks for the kind words.
And Cees, the tree with the deadwood is dead because the tree got pear-rust[perenroest in het Nederlands]
The tree got to much pear-rust, so I couldn't treat it any more
Greetings Ed

Hi! Ed
sorry to hear that Ed,.....never is nice to decide that a tree has to go!
Hate that swampy mess in my trees, now i get rid of them imidiately!
Anywhere else in the world pear-rust (maybe new toppic ) & what to do?

Re: Berberis cascade styling
I have just seen this thread! Amazing tree!
Needless to repeat the flattering comments of previous posters.
I do love this species but I find it to be very "stubborn" as far as flexibility of branches is concerned... I have given a little berberis a try in the past and I had wired some branches to the desirable position for whole 7 months or so and as soon as wires were cut off the branches returned to their previous upright position/direction

Re: Berberis cascade styling
I think you can wire the branches to set up the overall design, but then it's preferable to let grow and clip, if only because of the tiny thorns

Re: Berberis cascade styling
Yes, indeed Alain! I tend to believe that clip and grow must be the only method to give movement to berberis branches.AlainK wrote: ... ...but then it's preferable to let grow and clip... ...
