BCI/ABS Stand Making Workshop in Kentucky
At the upcoming BCI/ABS Bonsai convention in Kentucky there will be a stand making workshop conducted by yours truly.
So far only 4 people have signed up but there is room for more. Here are two photos of a semi-finished prototype stand, ( it still need a few more coats of polyurethane for water resistance)
As you can see, they are made from solid mahogany, with an inserted Japanese maple leaf cut out. The sides feature a raised bead and there is a curved bead on the bottom of the legs to match the curved side. The front under the top has a raised cloud motif. This style and details require lots of hand work (I hate stands that look like they came straight off the table saw) but the good news is the hard work has been done by me. For the workshop, the stands will be glued up and the rough carving done. All the workshop attendees will need to do is to fine tune the insert, final sand the stands and decide on a finish for the stand. The Japanese maple leaf inserts can be left a lighter color as they are made from birch plywood for strength across the grain, or they can be stained darker, or if one wants to get creative, they can be gold leafed, or to get really wild, paint them with acrylic paint to look a real leaf in the fall.
The actual kits will be very close to the prototype but I did tweak the design a bit too make the proportions even more refined. The stands will be about 17.5 in by 10.5 in by 8.25 inches tall.
The workshop only costs $75 which doesn't even fully cover the cost of the wood and materials.
These are not the best photographs but they get the message across.
Hope to see you in the workshop.

Ok, CJ, but it will be tough to fit in an envelope.

Rob,
Really nice! Great idea for a workshop. I hope more sign up for you. I can't make it, or I'd be on the list for sure.
