Ahhhhhhhh, early spring has finally arrived here in Western Kentucky. I always know the warmth is just around the corner when this Acer palmatum "Akaji nashiki" starts to leaf out.

Wow, Randy. Acer buds are just starting to swell in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, Central Piedmont. Do you Winter your trees outdoors or are they in a cold frame, or other structure?
Nice tree by the way. Is it planted on rock or growing between the rocks?
Best, Todd

Todd,

It's been in a cool temp. greenhouse for the winter so things happen a bit earlier than outside where everything is still dormant. It's planted on the rock and growing through it. The trunk has finally gotten large enough to actually split the lava rock that it's planted on.

Thanks Jupp and John,

No, this tree is going to be on the rock untill the rock crumbles. I rather like the look of a tree growing into the rock at least for now anyway.
