progress carving
carving, as with other aspects of bonsai development from raw stock, occurs in phases. some carve by "feel". when the feeling is there and you see something - you carve. when the feeling leaves, you stop. such is the case with this premna - a work in progress over the past 3 years. this particular trunk started out nearly solid and bland looking. after four different episodes, this is the trunk today. more remains to be done, especially to the upper half. the two largest holes need to be feathered and made to look less contrived.

more carving
sharing more work in process - carving premna microphylla. yesterday's carving was aimed at reducing bulky dead roots creating movement. upper trunk deadwood was reduced to create more movement and to accentuate character and age by creating see through places in the deadwood. some befores and afters. more refinement and detail in the future
best wishes, sam

Hi Sam
That carving is ghostly...I have never seen a living dead premna
...a work of art, in my opinion - though you say it is still in progres ;-)

Re: progress carving
I like the depth and shadow you've created but the holes are too round. Try tapering the bottom of the circle to a point maybe.
