progress - premna on rock

in june 2009, a rooted premna cutting was planted on this lava stone. the first pictures were taken in august 2009 after the plant had begun to grasp solidly onto and grow down the back of the rock.

still a ways to go, but progressing nicely. the branches are thickening and developing secondary and tertiary growth. the leaves are getting smaller and smaller with each defoliation. the roots are down the rock and into the pot. in the future, thick ropey roots embracing the whole stone will be an important feature of this planting.

I'm amazed at how much growth was produced in the year plus since it was planted on the stone. It looks happy and vigorous! I wish we had the same growing season in Virginia!
