Re: my "Ents" tree from lord of the rings
I have been talking about creating some Ents recently with a very creative friend of mine only to discover you have beaten us to it. Here’s a piece of material and my ent design, I haven’t actually done the work yet but will post it as soon as I do.
The other picture I have posted is what I call a tree tattoo. It makes use of the fact that structural molecules are manufactured by a tree within its leaves and are predominantly carried downwards through the phloem towards the roots. It is for this reason that the bark swells rapidly above an air layer whilst scarcely healing below. The image shown was carved in June 2010 I expect that by further channelling the tree’s nutrients through the relief I have created that I will able to physically grow a face from the living trunk of the tree. Although the example shown has been carved onto a young chestnut with a diameter of 18 inches the process should work equally well on a smaller trunk and will probably give a much faster result.
this is a piece of privet which belongs to a customer of mine. We've been debating what to do with it for a couple of years. I can't see a conventional bonsai but I can see an ent in there
Heres my design, a bit william blake but i kind of like that. I aim to get the work done sometime this month
And my tree tattoo the first pic from may 2010 and the second taken in september, 4 months later.

Wow. great carving Simon!
If a bulge could be created in that area of the face it will be more interesting.
i been doing weird trees before I did bonsai. hehehe.

Some really interesting stuff coming out here. Particularly like the tree tattoo and the face on the Yew.

"Doug,

Thanks Jun
No female faces yet but maybe someday.
Funny when you do something "creative" like my Native American Yew how it gets attention.
I've got hundreds of Bonsai in my yard, that my kids pretty much ignore, but I’ve caught my daughter showing my "cool Indian bonsai" to several of her friends, walking by much better Bonsai to get to it.
I guess thats the reason Shock Art is done.

Hi All
I'm a fan, the books in my young days and obviously the movies in later years.
I also want to recommend the extended versions, MUCH more viewing pleasure, and the normal releases rob you of a lot of details.
The Ents get more airtime too.
Great trees, this is something I've considered doing for a long time, but I doubt if I have the artistic skill and vision to pull it off as well as shown here - really love it.
Cheers
Gerhard

Weird Jun,
like an Ent as Gandalf, the tree says - You shall not pass - I guess the viewer is the Balrog?
Putting aside the silliness - really like that tree
Interesting what should be bar-branches, but they work.
The collective Valar bow their heads to a most worthy son of Yavanna.
Elementally yours.

Honeysuckle Ent
Here's my entry for bonsai ents. This one is a Honeysuckle. Kind'a beefy, with a 14" root base.
To me he looks as though he's got antlers, striding across the land with his arms spread wide.
Kind regards,
Andy

Hi Andy.
he got antlers alright.
he looks cute though rather than "scary" but very expressive.
with your angle of shot, is the face part of the tree or the wooden fence background?

jun

You're right, Jun; poor angle and background on the shot. My bad. That IS a face carved into the shari there. A la Nick Lenz.

Andy

Re: my "Ents" tree from lord of the rings
Hi All
I bought a plant 5+ years ago, a while before getting into bonsai - it just grabbeb me......
I'm a newbie and not very artistic, but I like to think I'm getting there and some results have been pleasing if not magnificent.
THIS tree has always and continues to be a frustration, and I'm sure I've made matter worse with all my attempts.
I suspect now is as good a time as any to give up and style it as an Ent
Cheers

Hi Brett!
I think that's how a baby Ent looks like.
He's cute and cuddly.
He'll be ferocious someday.

jun

Re: my "Ents" tree from lord of the rings
I think your onto something there Jun. I realised today the legs are fattening faster than the body so I think the turkey is on it's way out. But the feet are tapering well. I also noticed the branches are now thicker than the leader. It has been slow at times recovering after Winter so I have tended to let any growth extend to try and get it going.
Was one of my first trees so I would have hoped to get closer to where I am going by now (wherever that is). Hopefully it keeps the vigor it has shown lately because it is always fun to work on.
