John,
thanks.
you really love elms huh? im telling you the tall elm was not that good alone. very long slender trunk with poor branching.
if you have some tall elms or if you could buy cheap one. get two more small "S" elm of different height and trunk girt, get some natural looking rocks with uniform looks...then you can create a lovely chinese elm landscape penjing.

John,
i have some success growing some elms here. the smallest one on the right side of the photo came from cutting of other elms.
some elms specially the "s" elms, i buy them locally from different nurseries. its so difficult to buy on line, you will never know what kind of trash will be delivered to you.

john,
If you are tired and bored with some elms which i personally refered to as "factory made"...my suggestion is for you to try something different on them. try to do some penjing, its fun and easy to do. if you need some guide on it I can offer you a help on the design, it wont cost you much and its a good boost to your elm collection.
before the end of the day Il do some plan for you on one of your elms if it is okey with you.

Re: 2 of penjing
John,
you can use this as your reference for your penjing. the two trees are fraom your elms post.
but you got to the smallest "S" elm. the sizes and angles are from your photos, so it is workable design.
I hope you like it.
you can also used shallow oval pot, if you can find white marble slab that would be perfect.
