Mike,

In Japan the satsuki start blooming in late May and into June. The Satsuki Festival in Kanuma is the first week of June. The peak here on the Gulf Coast it's even earlier than that by about three weeks, usually around Mothers Day. I just can't see S. F. being that much ahead of us. Our indicas (the Southern Indian hybrids) are just starting to bloom, and I think that's what you have rather than satsuki - Rhododendron indicum.

Nice trunk!

Russell
Thanks for your comments, and for correctly identifying the azalea.
I had some doubt about it, but couldn't resist the alliteration of "sumo satsuki". Smile

Either way, it's purty.

Thanks for sharing Mike.

Mahalo,

It's urban landscape collected material. Severely cut back to reduce it's height. Well fed to produce new shoots and flowers. 10% skill. 90% luck. I have no clue as to the age. Folks that know azaleas and their growth habits may be able to give a good guess.
