Pot Colour - Choices
Dale, Folks........Not to take away from your post Dale as I really like the pots and discussion but I wanted to see what others thoughts were on pot colour choices.....
If the moderators need to move this post….please go ahead….
So
How about some discussion on the choice of colour for Dale’s last post - the blue pot for the bougie. What struck me was that even thought it was striking the blue just didn't seem/appear right????!!! So I looked up a colour wheel and.....
A complementary colour based on the leaf colour (light green) would almost be a darker shade of the flowers?!.. Whereas a complementary colour for the flowers would be the leaf colour? The blue pot colour is complementary to a medium to yellow orange, which isn't anywhere in the image? Just curious on the thoughts of other members with more experience in these matters.
Cheers G.

Re: Some pots for the new gallery
Who is to say what is right and what is wrong? Just as the styling of each tree is the decision of the individual artist, so to is the style/colour of the pot it sits in.
Funnily enough, I had this conversation with Tony last night over a coffee. I only have 2 criteria regarding whether a pot is right or not: (a) Is the pot big enough to sustain the health of the tree, and (b) When I look at the tree, does the pot disappear. If the answer to these two questions is Yes, then it's the right pot.

Re: Some pots for the new gallery
So Harley,
When you look at the trees in a landscape, do you only see the trees, or do you feel the total combined effect of the tree/slab/pot/tray......, "I've been there, I've seen that.... and it took me back"...."its looks like so and so"...
I agree because I have no choice to put in the pot that's closet at hand and "fits" works for now" as I don't have the skill yet but am still willing to learn as much as I can.
Headed into camp to look at some real trees in a local inlet/fiord and try the local fishing holes.
Be back in a few days.....
Cheers G

Dale,
The color combo is nice and subtle. The pinecone impressions are your own creative trademark.

Re: Some pots for the new gallery
Here are two different types of round Dry Riverbed pots.
The first uses the band as the ovals above have.
The second, much larger pot, uses a redish gritty clay with a more extreme surface treatment.
The third pot is of the same clay as the second and with same treatments, except it has a green ash drippy glaze.

Beautiful as always Dale. The last one shows a wonderfully rustic finish and the glaze is nicely subtle. I would love to see a few rustic nanban (am I using that term correctly?) type of literati pots in that finish, with or without the glaze.

What are the dimensions of the reddish gritty pots (he asked as inconspicuously as possible so no one would buy them before he knew whether or not he could use them)? <whistling casually>

Mike, The larger first one measures 13 1/2" across and inside depth of 2 3/4".
The second one with ash glaze measures 10 1/2" across and inside depth is 2".

Re: Some pots for the new gallery
Klaudia, Thank you so much.
In fact, I got a PM about it after I had it packed up for the show. So, I pulled it out when I got there along with another. So, hopefully it will have a new home soon.
I took a few pictures of some of the trees at the Asheville show that were in my pots. Since they weren't shown in the other thread, I'll show them here
This was the last show of the year for me, as usual, so I want to thank the customers at the Asheville show who took the time to browse my booth and maybe took home some purchases. Thanks again! It is greatly appreciated!

Re: Some pots for the new gallery
Hi Dale: I just went back and looked at some of your pots you have posted. I find your Riverbend(RBP) glazes to be the most amazing I have ever seen. One day I have to make a trip to your place when I visit father(95yrs. old and doing o.k.) and buy one of those pots. I keep buying Jap. Tok. and they are ok but your work surpasses anything I have ever seen including some European. If ever hear from my daughters or wife it is because I sent them for Santa or birthday gift for moi. Thanks Dustin,
In fact you've been but a few minutes from my house several times I'm sure when shopping locally.
Stop by in the summer sometime, I have a fair garden.

Re: Some pots for the new gallery
Dale; Thanks for reply.i think I am going to buy a pot or two from you long before next summer. I will try to find your email address and forward to you photo of somewhat large Portulcar.(twin trunk) i have had in several pots plus a shohin buttonwood, and a fig too. I re-pot any time of year w/my light and heat. Just starting to get a feel for pots, and what I like and don't like. Again your Dry River Bed(with green and tan plus cracks) is exciting. I also think that one gas fired(sort of copper/gold) would look beautiful w/Chinese Elm(exfol. bark) I have. I had been getting pots from Bruce Baker's collection. Dustin
