QUICK OPINIONS ???
putting together my wisconsin state fair exhibit...
the state fair exhibit is not at all like a regular bonsai display (i.e. very limited room, only 1 back wall, so no "scrolls" etc)
basically its just a bunch of trees put on tables for the public's perusal... maybe an accent but not much more...
so, i need to submit it tonight and while i feel that the tree is solid, as usual i was stuck for a stand, and came up with 2 possibilities...
so opinions (and justifications) welcome today:
tall stand:
short stand:
and while "neither" is not an option, opinions as to why not would be beneficial for future reference...
thanks !

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
Both stands are too small (diameter) for the tree and pot. I'd rather see the elephant on the small stand and the tree on the mat.

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
jim - due to the low levels of the tables (not standard display height) i wanted to elevate the tree...
(and also force some distance perspective on the accent)
re the diameter, i wanted the crescent to appear "perched" rather than "plateaued"
but i do see what you mean in that the it could be a wider stand...
lance - you chose your words very kindly

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
tall stand - definitely
given the choices
you need to collect more "found objects" so you have an assortment of stands to choose from.

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
lance - dose is nice !!!
and i dig the trunk and diving 1st branch on nomad johnny's...
having only done this for 3-4 years it seems like spekboom are almost all i have ready for show...
leo - you know me... i gots lottsa that stuff... just never what i need when i need it
and after plundering my stash over the past few days and coming up empty, i ended up picking up both these choices yesterday at the goodwill and then doing a hasty earl scheib on 'em... seems like crescent pots are a little tricky to site.

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
Do you have or can you get an old stump that you could level and use as an "elevated" stand?

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
i do, but it was way too large for this...
those are always something i keep my eyes open for and even recently bought an electric chain saw for the leveling...
oh well... like i said to leo, i (we?) never have what we need when we need it
and it is only state fair after all...

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
I agree with Jim. the mat is the only decent option regardless of height. the others are just too small and make the tree look unstable.

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
Hey Kev... If those are the only choices i would use the taller stand. I do not agree that the stands need to be necessarily bigger.... Especially since you are using a mat. You might consider cutting and painting a piece of 4 or 6" pvc pipe...maybe even place a small board on top of the pipe....you can cut the pipe to whatever length you want.
For my taste, i believe the focal point of the display needs to be on highest stand....can't really recall any decent displays in which the accent was higher than the tree.

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
i guess i wasnt clear when i said that i had to turn it in last nite... that meant everything was in my car for delivery directly from work, so there was no back to the drawing board...
jim - i tried a few bricks as i have a bunch of really cool old city street pavers but i didnt like the color with the pot
john - i did consider a piece of pipe and i have a concrete one, but it was too tall and the grey color clashed with the browns of the pot and it is really old and i didnt want to break it and i didnt want to paint it and and and and
again, had to keep it simple for state fair and i am happy enough with the taller of the 2 stands
and its at least good enough for the type of girls i tend to date
thanks again for the input

Re: QUICK OPINIONS ???
Beautiful effort Kevin.
Would have focused on a simple way to elevate the bonsai, perhaps a white tall papered box and maybe a rock for distance.
Thanks for showing.
