workshop shimpaku (Kishu?)
This was my draw from a from a workshop at the arboretum 4 or so years ago. I remember being pretty disappointed with what was left when my number was drawn, but it has grown on me (pun intended). During the workshop we bent a big bow shape into the long straight section and then carefully arranges all of the branches that were to later be removed as sacrifice growth. I was careful to preserve the growth closest to base of the tree in order to encourage taper and to leave options open in the future. During a workshop with Roy Nagatoshi this spring, while I was repotting my Tsuga from the other thread. I let Roy do his thing with the top of this tree and then positioned it in the new pot which I picked up while in Brasil for a wedding in Feb. I got a whole stack of pots while I was visiting the site of the kiln of Shugo Izumi; The prices were very good given the current exchange rate, and I enjoyed the style/texture of this one in particular. Roy said that this pot was way too big, but that it would do for training. I know that generally you cut a tree down to the right sized pot, but I think that it will eventually grow to fit the pot after a year or ten.
