Re: 40 year old winged elm
Hi,
Regards,
Stefan
Absolutely gorgeous - it really looks like a mature tree in nature. May I ask how large it is?kenduncan wrote:I think that is is a very natural looking tree, I have seen old Winged Elms around here that look very much like this tree.

Thanks John, I like your elm also. I do not think that I have seen this one before. Is it new?
MB is planing a new pot for this one this Spring, I think that it will be an improvement.
Thank You Sulrich, the Elm is 30 inches from the rim of the pot.

Re: 40 year old winged elm
Already I observed this tree one 40 times!
With or without leaves, the beauty is the same one!
And all shown here also.
My interest in the species is for being it adaptable to the Brazil
Thanks Luciano.

[quote="kenduncan"]This is a Winged Elm that belongs to a good friend of mine.
It is about 40 years old from a collected tree about 30 years ago.

Absolutely beautiful wood, as if I saw how it grows in nature.

Re: 40 year old winged elm
Ken - Thanks for posting these pictures; it's good to see this tree get some recognition. It captures perfectly the image of a wild-grown elm, as opposed to an elm shaped to look like a bonsai. You'll remember that at the Expo there was another elm, a Chinese elm, within sight of this winged elm, and that Chinese elm was the epitome of a "bonsai" tree. It had the pointy apex and all of its branches were trained to be descending. It was well done, and no doubt it looked the way that many people expect a bonsai to look, but it had no connection with elms or the vast majority of deciduous trees, beyond the fact that it was genetically an Ulmus species. Nothing says that any given type of tree needs to be shaped for bonsai in accordance with how it typically grows in nature. It's nice to see it sometimes done that way, though, because it shows some honesty and independent thinking. It's also a great challenge to make a bonsai look both naturalistic and artistic.
I had hoped to see this winged elm given one of the awards at the show, but it wasn't. Still, by the response it has drawn here, you can tell that it strikes a positive chord with many people.
