Re: Cherry and walnut stands
Hank whenever someone posts I always expect that they want some feedback.
So let me give my perspective on your wonderful workmanship.
The more I get into display the more I think, I like a dark wooded stand that does not compete with the tree/pot for attention. While your workmanship is top grade, I'm not convinced I like the lighter wood. I think the only tree that could compete with the cherry would be a flowering/fruit bearing subject planted in a porcellan white pot with a beautiful scene outwardly painted on all sides. Please in No way feel this is any criticism of your workmanship only a disagreement with kind of wood used.
With your shohin table, I would like to see the heights of the stands and their placement on the base board done using the golden rule proportion for display. basically 60/40...the lead stand in the foreground and the secondary
back a third to the rear.
I hope my opinion helps you to give some thoughts towards your development/progress, in something your obviously very good at.

Thank you for your comments - they are very much appreciated.
With regard to the larger cherry stand I have also made a few in walnut. When the finishing is done I will post an image. I like cherry and I have been trying to get a darker finish without completely obscuring the grain. One of the things I particularly like is that it darkens with age. I have recently posted in the bonsai discussion section a few images of some of my figs on cherry stands.
When I made the shohin stand I was pleased with it until I put a few trees on it. I agree that the smaller pedestal should be shorter in height and I like your suggestion about the 60/40 ratio. I also think the base should be a bit longer.. Hopefully this week I will have some time to make one. When it is done I will post an image.
Once again many thanks for taking the time to comment on the stands. Please continue to do so in the future as I highly value your comments and suggestions.
Regards
Hank

I was reminded by the guy finishing my toko that cherry darkens with age. he showed my current finishes against stuff close to 100 years old. Quite amazing.

Re: Cherry and walnut stands
I especially like the last one. The two-stand stand still doesn't quite do it for me, but that, of course is a matter of personal taste. I suspect that this is one of those infrequent times when I'm a staunch traditionalist.
