Raised Bed Soil
I am putting in some raised beds for growing out trees. I am putting in bagged topsoil and would like to lighten up the soil some. Increase drainage.
Should I put vermiculite in or something else?

Re: Raised Bed Soil
bags of pine bark mulch and play sand can be found easily, and for very cheap - I've had good luck with these in my beds to improve the structure. Make sure you're adding organic matter to the bed each season (homemade compost, leaf mold, grass clippings, etc.)

Re: Raised Bed Soil
In my beds, I mixed garden center topsoil and compost with some pine bark, sand and a couple bags of cheap cat litter. The cat litter doesn't seem to break down in the beds, and wouldn't be a problem even if it did. It also helps keep the soil moist as well as loose and easily dug.

Manure/compst,topsoil,pinebark and a little charcoal and pumice to prevent it from getting too compact

Expanded shale or "vole buster" is cheap and heavy, but helps with air and drainage, an makes repotting way easier when it comes time. Turface is is good for those too. Fresh but aged compost. Mulch and black cow. It is pretty hard to screw up a raised bed when I think about it.
