Re: Vietnam International bonsai show
Some more trees...and examples of tropical trees styled as pine based on "Japanese" pinetree principles
one of the most common problem if tropical trees were design based on 1,2,3 branch and followed the pine tree style... No matter how good the material is it will not achieve its full potential.
This is when the designer have a template etched on his mind what a literati should look like...again pine inspired.
...even cascade trees were designed confusingly with 1,2,3 branch...
...We did a tree critique on stage I am just sharing some of the topics we discussed on how the tree were to be improved...Some people were too shock, some openly accept the ideas, mostly the younger generation, But slowly it will sink in. specially right now that the winning trees were the new ones not designed in the template method.

One show at a time Robert, I think they will accept it. The majority of the bonsai people in Vietnam are young generations trying to explore ideas, new ones and creative ones...Like we said, Bonsai is an art. and should NOT be dictated by any rules. That idea when you reiterated it to them live on stage they got the idea and they accept it openly.Robert Steven wrote:Hope they are willing to open their heart for new perspective with the key we gave them. Hi Jun and Robert,
It was a lovely show, and thank you for sharing another set of photos from a show you guys have attended. I love seeing these events from different parts of the world.
My one question, or request, would be if you could maybe expand on why you chose this particular tree as the best in the show. I'm more curious as to what made you choose this tree, I am not trying to say it is not a worthy tree.

Tom,
This is not The Best In Show (sorry I don't have the photo, do you Jun ?), but this bonsai was selected by myself as the winner of Ryuga Dragon Award (http://ryugabonsaitools.blogspot.com/)
The main mission of Ryuga to present the Ryuga Dragon Award is to promote bonsai art, specifically to encourage creativity in bonsai design. So the selected tree might not be the best, but among others, this bonsai was considered as the best in design creativity, specifically in the present stage of Vietnam bonsai where most of them are still holding the 1-2-3 rules. So this Ryuga Dragon Award is in line with the concept we are promoting to open their mind and heart for new perspective.

Jun, Sifu,
looks like you guys are trying to balance a tree more by mass and negative spaces.
Ah, but trees on our side, tend to build domes and considerably smaller negative spaces.
Should be an interesting experience, us showing bushes - chuckle.
I am joking, but listening to you.
Thanks for all the effort.

IMHO, in bonsai, we are not merely copy the nature, although nature is the most perfect and best source of inspiration, but when converted into bonsai, as an art, we should give the aesthetic touch to obtain artistic beauty in logical clue of horticulture. BTW, negative space is part of the composition elements, so it is as important as the mass.

Sifu,
does either of your books have a clear explanation of these ideas.
Apologies, some bonsai books cost a great deal, and I am a second hand book specialist.
Thanks.
Later.

* Does anyone know what type of tree, the best in the show is ?

LLB,
the best in show/ winning tree is a Bluebell. Desmodium. Vietnam has the widest and best varieties of this species. soon it will be their iconic tree.(I think)

If you view bonsai as an art. you can translate basic principles of art subjects to bonsai like contrast and balance, negative space against volume/mass. heaviness against lightness , movement against stillness etc. but if somebody threat bonsai as a mere horticulture or gardening, there is no need for him/her to learn art.
even dome tree designs needs negative space and contrast, otherwise it will look more like a shurb and not matured natural tree.

Re: Vietnam International bonsai show
L.L.B, and Sifu,
you need to remember, that on my side, it is an open field, new trees coming in yearly [ I normally bring in two ] and they have to be understood horticulturally and then as a typical shape. The art part for me comes naturally, as I design my trees as though they were a painting.
However, I have no problems with the 1,2,3 as branching goes, as long as one remembers, that the placements are for VOLUME , otherwise you get ladder trees.
Though I have always enjoyed the Chinese Classical Ink paintings, especially the earlier centuries, my world has no limestone formations, just gentle sugarloaf mounds. We have no igneous features either.
Additionally, even though I use the grow and clip, technique, it will always be gentler.
I have no problems with our gentle landscape, and quietude, I long ago learned to love what exists on this island.
What I am exploring as tree shapes go is what is typical for us, it requires at least 10 drawings to decipher the simplicity, and simple pot shapes, but it does allow the viewer to come away with a sense of peace and joy.
The trees are symbols for rejuvination and health.
So for us, the poster tree would be something along the lines of Saman samanea. The great ancient tree that shades and protects the lonely and lost.
Until.
