1st time i ever had to do this
and that was to break a pot to get the tree out. I acquired it from a collection in which the owner last summer, who had health problems and the collection was not cared for for a couple of years.
I tried everything to get it to snap around but looked terrible dispite my best efforts. Cute little mugho. It now resides in a bigger pot for health reasons and hopefully it will recover. I didn't want to transplant it last summer
because of the bad timing.
anyone else ever had to do that?

I don't think I have ever had to break a bonsai pot. I have always been able to cut around the sides and let it dry a little. I have a little scythe tool that works well. The blade has small saw teeth.

Hello Dick.
Once with a juniper in a cascadepot.
Same story, it was already to long in that pot when i bought it from a nursery.

Yes, I have seen a gingko stuck in a pot with a beaded (on the interior) lip because of those heavy tuberous lignified roots. Glad it wasn't my pot.
