Or doing a MOUNTAIN of ironing while other people watch the sport on sixteen channels all at once Sad

Ashes? That's that daft crickety thing with eleven grown men trying to thump a small round bit of leather about an oval of grass with a flat stick while eleven others stand around uselessly and watch while they do so?

Or is that only when England are fielding. Laughing

Yep. I think the cream was called Itchy Ban. Oh no hang on; that's Marco's new bonsai tool.

Oh, cricket. I know cricket.

Back in 1952 I was in the fourth form at King George V school in Hong Kong. There was one other Yank in the class. Neither of us ever managed to hit the ball. The danged er, "pitcher" couldn't even reach us when he threw the ball. Kept bouncing before it got to us.

I tried to convince them to play something sensible -- like baseball.

I loved that year. To get to school I had to ride a cable car down a mountain, then rode a ferry across the bay as it dodged junks and sampans, and then took a double decker bus the rest of the way. Then I got to do it all over again in the other direction!

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

Umm, yeah. That's why I used the quotes.

And that sometimes takes two or three days (or was it months?) to decide, yes? Or at least it seemed like months to one standing idly in the field on the "out" side wondering if something would ever happen.

Yea, I got that. I was more promoting my extreme level of knowledge of the sport based on watching a movie.

John, in his introduction to cricket, is advised to start by simply protecting his stump. To which he steps up like Babe Ruth, says "Oh, Bowler" and puts one throught thf windows of the castle room where the crown was being stored.

Such ended my instruction in the sport of cricket.

It's not a sport - it's an instrument of torture.

Not sure whether that's for the players or the spectators tho'.

Possibly both if you're England. Twisted Evil

it is a gentleman's art form. played by gentlemen. Seriously, while things are changing, it is one of the few mass participation sports where sportsmanship is held dear and adhered to. It's complicated, but it is a fascinating game, especially test cricket. 20/20 and one day cricket are a compromise in that thjere are more runs scored and more excitment, but you can't beat the elegance of a long test match in the British summer. Glorious. Apart from newcastle United thrashing seven bells out of Sunderland.
