AUTUMN BONSAI IN ROCHESTER, NY
Autumn has arrived in Rochester, New York!
Although it's a beautiful time of the year, especially in my garden full of deciduous bonsai, it's not my favorite season because I know what is coming up. Just signed my snowplowing contract for the season too....
We are preparing bonsai for a photo shoot next week to capture the beauty of the bonsai for my new 50th Anniversary Commemorative Album.
Enjoy!

One of the main reasons my collection is weighted so heavily towards deciduous trees is because of this time of year. Bills Garden is almost like a candy shop of colors, like lollipops of all different flavors!

Absolutely amazing. Nothing short of spectacular. I second the motion of moving south.

Thanks Bill,
The color is stunning, that is we don't have in the tropics.

At this time, I suffer from extreme envy, until our trees begin to respond to our dry season and start to flower or change colours in the leaf.
Ha ha.
Later.

Truly awesome, Bill. Thanks for sharing with those of us who are fall-color-challenged.

Re: AUTUMN BONSAI IN ROCHESTER, NY
Glad everyone likes the color of my garden.
However, in our climate you must also take the good (but beautiful) along with the bad.
Attached are a few photos taken only 5 DAYS BEFORE the first photos!
We had our first frost/freeze of the season on Saturday, October 13, 2012. My personal bonsai collection is all watered by hand for perfect control.
But in the sales area and nursery area I have automatic irrigation, but it too, is often hand watered. I forgot the automatic watering was on in one area and we woke up to discover the ice display. Many of my Saturday students ran out to enjoy the crystals, which only lasted for about 30 minutes until the temperatures climbed above freezing. All the trees are fine, no problem at all. Actually, as water freezes it releases heat. Farmers often turn their water on dring frosts in southern areas to protect tender crops.

Autumn Bonsai in New York
Nah! If he moved south, his trees would stop showing the color. Leave him up north and we'll just have to be jealous.

chrysanthemum
Hey Bill, in the background on the right, is that a chrysanthemum bonsai? Could you post images of this tree, or a note about using Chrysanthemum. I am just starting to explore this group. How do you winter yours? What is the lowest temp you allow them to be exposed to in winter?
Beautiful autumn colors and superb trees.
Thanks

I just left Rochester Saturday, after a week touring Bonsai Gardens in the Northeast, and Bills Bonsai in Autumn is a sight to behold! As with all Bonsai, so much better in person!
