pine grafting questions
I have a large and really nice collected Eastern White Pine, which I had tried to graft twice now with Japanese White Pine, but with no luck. I tried a couple different methods but was wondering if anyone has tried Thread Grafting Pines? Seems to me it might work tying down the needles and slipping it through a hole.
My other question is since I know you can graft White Pine onto Black Pine roots, does anyone know if it is possible to graft Black or Red Pine onto White pine?
Thanks in advance.

Re: pine grafting questions
Thread grafting pine: Nick Lenz did this years ago. He would pick all the needles off and thread the bud through a hole. He was putting Zuiwisho (sp) onto eastern white. It was a very slow process. One attempt was revealed a folly after several seasons when it became apparent the thread was through dead wood. I personally have had better luck with one-point grafts and slot grafts.
My take on assuring success, other than good techniques and secure unions, is to make sure all plants involved are growing strong and healthy otherwise it takes years and years to develop strength in the grafts.

Re: pine grafting questions
Thanks Crust, interesting to know that it's been done with what it sounds like some success. My White Pine has a great base but just such awful foliage that I have to keep trying I guess.
How about my second question about grafting Black or Red Pine onto a White Pine base, is it possible?

Re: pine grafting questions
Other pines on pines: Well, being one can go Scots to Pondo, others have done JRP and JBP to Pondo I don't see why not but I have not seen it happen. I imagine the Japanese have done black on white--even so it might be a monstrosity. I would lean toward the red to white if you must--I'd try the Zuisho if you can get it or some other Japanese white or some other selected small needle white.

pines can be grafted to pines just like junipers can be grafted to all junipers
