present from Jolz and a design challenge

HI IBC.

This tree was given to me by Jolz, when Ka Pabling (thanks Mang Pabling for the other tree too) visited him last week in his place.

Jolz wanted to know how I will deal with this wonderful tree.
For a long time now I was looking for a tree on the rock like this one...the weight (why weight not the size?) is perfect, the roots are long enough-probably more than a foot for the major roots.

I dreamed before of a floating tree (after I watched the movie ävatar, hehehe)...

JUN,,, Your new tree looks good and is interesting!! did you post what this one is?? MY humble opion,,the roots comming down the rock are great but the circleing roots at the bottom i don,t know...if you keep the tree in a pot which i would do could you plant it deeper??? the pot looks to small for me but what do i know!!! it is a nice looking tree..please post your plan for it.. take care john

I wanted something more extreme...really near to the one I saw in avatar and in my dream... something like this.





I'll cut most of the upper part of the tree and grow new apex.
Let the roots grow thick enough to carry the weight of the rock.

How i wish i can achieve the way you think on how to make something extremely impressive on bonsai materials.

Jun, that has to be the most incredible design concept I've ever seen. It's creativity like yours that inspires so many of us.

Very funny to see that the creativity stay an international way.

I have three trees in action in this style that i've started just after i've seen the movie.

I should make it faster with tropical species if i lived in a tropical area but it's not the case so i believe it's not going to be finished until 8 or 10 years maybe.

Awesome Jun! Consider using a masonry drill to drill out the stone from the bottom as much as possible to reduce weight. With some patience, you may be able to hollow out quite a bit without it being visible (particularly because the stone is already full of cavities).

I love this idea. Brilliant, Jun.

Purism can take a back seat on this one.

Hi Jun,

figuratively and literally an out of the world tree. You surpassed yourself with this design idea... All the very best on this and also on the challenge on reducing the leaf size....

Not so fast jun, dont be in a hurry putting that tree in the pot.staighten the roots put it in a 4inch pvc pipe lenght will depend on you,fill the pvc with riversand then put lot of organic fertilizer below, in a few months you will have long and thicker roots. decide how long and thick the roots you want.

I'll do that in the second stage of development after I got the coil on the base of the roots.
like this ficus below which I am developing with the same technique.



probably, I will plant the tree in the ground once the root coil is formed, this will serve as the base of the composition because all of the metal frame will be removed too. I hope it will work.

But seriously - what is the purpose of the tubing - is it simply to get the roots to grow down straight or are there other reasons too?

...winning second world war with the energon cubes?? are you kidding? that clearly is an understatement Fiona. It is the object of desire of beings outside of this world...and can help win war of the worlds.


With regards to the less serious matter,,the bonsai matter that is. The tubings in the photo above contains mixture of sand, soil, and compost. after aerial roots appeared on the branches the tube serves as a direct feeding system
to the branches and aerial roots to fast track the growth of the branches or the aerial roots. it is a very effective method of fattening the branch and aerial roots.

I've sent your comment to the makers of Superthrive and they have replied that they're going to add it to their packaging. I'd go for one of their "cash reward" for that.

Interesting technique. I guess it really needs your climate and that things are therefore faster growing to work well.

I think it will work well in colder climates, especially for ficus. Ficus are tropicals and do not totally go to sleep during winter, having feeder tubes will increase the growth rate and survival of the tree and the branches and the higher portion of the trunk during this season. Logically speaking, with this technique substance needed by the upper part of the tree could reach the branches and branchlets directly and at a much faster rate, thus, the stress on the trunk area would be less. The under ground roots on the base of the trunk would feed the trunk and the aerial roots would feed the branches.
I am in tropical area, and my statement above is not yet tested in colder climate,,,but if somebody is willing to do an experiment I think the result will be beneficial to most people and trees in the colder regions.
...and I think it wont kill a tree.
