Acer griseum Empty Acer griseum

I found a paper bark maple about 4 ft. tall with a trunk 3 in. across . could i cut it down now so it will be easier to move around??? it has lost its leaves for this year.. it is heavy and bulky as it is.please let me know,i think it will make a nice tree..thanks very much john

This species is definitely recommended for bonsai. But let's see a picture of what you want to cut.

If it is a typical tall nursery tree, there will be very, very little taper from the base to any realistic point for a trunk chop. You need to look at whatever you want to buy with an eye for making a bonsai -- and the base and the trunk are the keys to good bonsai. A trunk without taper will NOT make a good or even a fair bonsai.

If the trunk is 3-inches in diameter at the base, it should be less than 1.5 inches at two feet above the base. (It also will help if there is a lot of foliage in the 2 feet.)

JIM,,Sorry I have not posted sooner but I wanted mr daughter to post a picture..so far she has not been around to do so..the trunk has some taper as for branches i will have to grow them..you will see when a get the picture posted...i am thinking that i want a tall tree with this one,i will see when you all get to see the trunk..thank you for posting for me...john
