Re: When to trunk chop Wisteria
Jay,
I suggest you drastically prune AND dig and pot your two Wisteria in April. They will probably just sit there for a few weeks, then when we get warm weather in late May (or June), they will suddenly pop and grow into a bush. Many specimens treated this way will also blossom the first year on new wood too, which is often repeated throughout the summer.
You have seen my specimens so no need to show you photos here.
Good luck,
Bill

Peter and Bill, thank you
I was hoping to get advice from folks who had worked with digging vines of this trunk caliper and I'm grateful for the wisdom.
All in one go huh?
Ok then thats what it will be. Best bring my 12 volt Dewalt reciprocating saw, Thats my power hori-hori.

Re: When to trunk chop Wisteria
Any updates on your collections?
I have a plant I lifted in March 2011 after the passing of a club member who needed his property "cleaned up". So it has lived for the last 14 months in a pot of about 10 gallons of garden soil. It has gone into leaf heavily but it is all at the top of about a 36" tall trunk of approx 1.5" caliper. My landscape plant buds back easily, but not too sure what might happen if I cut the trunk back to get some growth down low.
Hoping to see your results, Jay.
