PICTURES OF MY REWIRED ILEX VERTICILLATA
Hi everybody,
I would like to share some pictures of my rewired Ilex verticillata with you all.
Below: This is how this urban yamadori looked when I bought it in September 2009.
Below: The end of January 2010. The tree before it's first styling.
Below: And this picture is made two day's ago before the wiring work started. I think that this image is already pretty good, considering that it only has been worked on for two years. I like this wild look, it works well with the gnarly image of the trunks! But there needs to be more subtle order in that chaos of branches. And there need to be more open spaces to creat a image of a more distant tree.
Below: Left side view of the finished tree. I posted this on to show the distance between the three frond trunks and (see above) the middle and right side trunk in the back. They create a lot of depth that is lost in pictures!
Below: The end resuld after a afternoon of wiring.
I am pretty happy with the image of this pre Bonsai. A few more years and than it is "hunting for a good pot" time again!
I hope you enjoyed this little story?!
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

Looking good Hans! I'm jealous, I've been trying to find something decent to start with but I haven't had much luck. I guess I need to find one with a nice base and start over like you did. Does it produce berries for you?
Oh, and I think you mean verticillata.

Thanks Russell!
I was lucky to find this one and a few other promising species at "Deshima" , a nursery and bonsai school close by that is runned by my old Bonsai friend Teunis jan Klein. He had salvaged these plands from a little old train station that would be demolished. They were planted there a long time ago and were always just kept short, the hard way! So all the material that came from that place had yamadori like qualitys with lots of old scares and holes. Last year it had some clusters of little white flowers and green berries that never ripened and there for did not changed their color. I do know that it needs a male plant close by to flower and or fruit. Next year I have to get me some cuttings off a male one that lives in my friends collection for that same purpose!
And you are absolutely right with that wrong spelled name! This (prior) friend of mine, gave me this wrong name when I bought it from him and I blindly and in good trust used it ever since! Serves me right for not looking up some facts of this tree! But I could just as easily have misspelled the name completely by my self! After all, I am chairman (and only member) of the I.D.B.S (Internationel Dislactif Banzai Socyothe)!
Thanks for the warning!
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

He, Teunis jan Klein, always has some nice stuff for sale, there are lots of great pots and he also is a great teacher! Make sure to phone him when you want to go, he is not always open!
Good luck/ veel geluk!

Very nice Hans!!! It gives me inspiration on a multi-trunk Yaupon Holly I have that has languished over the years for lack of direction.

Beautiful, Hans! When do you plan to pot it? It seems quite ready for that!

Hi Andrei,
I am glad you like my tree! This spring I took it out of it's old training pot to plant it into a nice pot, but I found out to my surprise that the rootbal consisted of large roots and root stumps! I could not fix that in one go, so I took off as much as was safe and than repoted it into this smaller trainings pot! Now I have to wait for more new roots before I can take off the rest of the root stumps and plant it into a Bonsai pot!
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

Re: PICTURES OF MY REWIRED ILEX VERTICILLATA
Hans, the same often happens to me. I always say to myself that I should fist make the right root system before I focus of the trunk and branches, however in reality it doesn't always work this way. All the best with this lovely tree! Cheers, AndreiHans van Meer. wrote:Andrei Darusenkov wrote:Beautiful, Hans! When do you plan to pot it? It seems quite ready for that!
