A Rain tree has a very unusual trunk development mode so I wouldn't worry too much about taper when developing one, just do what the tree wants to do and take advantage of the flat sections to make an interesting tree.

Here you go Sam, I got mine defoliated today. Tomorrow its getting re-potted and refined some more.
