Adding Mycorrhiza to Bonsai Soil
Hello everyone,
I was getting ready to mix up a new batch of Bonsai Soil and I noticed a new peat moss at the nursery that contains mycorrhiza. I have read that this is beneficial to pines, however I was wondering if I could use this new peat moss with Mycorrhiza in a mutipurpose Bonsai Soil such as for tropicals and deciduous bonsai. Any tips or advise would be great.
Thank you,
Abe

It is my understanding that Mycorrhiza are very species specific, so although I don't think such a soil would hurt other trees, they won't help either.

Adding Mycorrhiza
There is a mixture of mycorrhizae for assorted species that you can buy for this purpose. Bonsai nurseries sell a brand with trace elements added. You apply it to the roots when repotting. The instructions say the spores must touch the roots to be effective. It doesn't migrate through the soil or wash down.
More to the point, I would NOT add peat moss to a bonsai soil mix in our climate. You will get instant root rot. Around here the preferred organic component is chopped pine or fir bark, well sifted or washed in a colander. Even tropicals need a free draining mix.
I suspect adding the mycorrhiza to the peat moss is a gimmick to sell more peat moss. I don't know how effective it would be for outdoor landscaping. Mycorrhiza is used on conifers for reforestation, but I don't know how they apply it.
