Japanese Black Pine Over Rock - need Pot Ideas
These are two Japanese Black Pine bonsai I grew from seed since 2002 - so almost 9 years. They are now attached to a rock that I bought from Harold Harvey, noted Florida bonsaist and rock collector, before he passed away. I think he said the rock came from one of the USA's deserts. The first shot is before work and the next is after thinning, wiring and slight revision to the front. I wonder if there are any ideas for a new pot? It's still a few years from being ready for a show - the taller tree is a bit slow - so I have time to find a good pot. The current pot is a inexpensive Chinese pot. The seeds came via E-Bay.
Before work tonight
After thinning and wiring. Note I rotated the tree a bit to change the front.
A close up of the roots on the rock from the front.
And from the back.

hi, excelent to see nice pines from seed,
for me it would be a nice rugged slab - either hunt one out ot have a go at making it maybe - the floor tile cement is quite easy to work with.
If you want a more traditional pot a shallow rugged 'wobbly' oval, cracked edges etc - oxide type finish - that lovely mixture of gunmetal and grey/black.
For the years of effort you've put in I'd treat the tree to a Dan Barton creation - then you would have a truely unique tree/pot combination to show with pride.
i pasted this picture from Dans web site of the type of thing i had in mind

Might be pretty cool. How far is Dan from Scotland? - I'm going there is a few weeks.

Vic that is a wild pot - where did you find it?
This composition seems to be begging for something different, one problem might be the rock is actually fairly substantial under the soil. The tree will either need to be raised more or a deeper pot.
As for growing from seeds, if take about 10 years to make decent shohin JBP from seeds so if anyone has 10 years to go, give seeds a try. They are a lot of fun.

Dan is about 500 miles from Scotland ! but you would need to order the pot especially as nearly all his pots are made to order I believe, often a specific pot for a specific tree....
if he's reading this he may suggest an idea or two.....it would be nice to see what he thinks would suit the tree

Hi Rob
Actually it is one of mine, i have done have several like this. I made one for Harry's Hawthorn and he showed it on his gallery, it caused quite a bit of interest. I see what you're saying about the rock, maybe something like this pot but with a bit more depth.
I have grown a number of decidous trees from seed but never a JBP, i might give it a go !
Cheers

Rob,
Interesting pine and well done, especially when grown and trained from seed in Florida!
I like the bonsai, but none of the pots which have been selected. They seem too shallow for my taste. This bonsai needs a deeper and more massive pot to balance the composition. Also the color was a bit too dark and many of the pots were too busy with the texture which would blend with the bark texture, rather than contrast with it.
Here is my quick idea of a suggested pot for your bonsai.

Thanks for the idea Bill, a semi-cascade pot may be the ticket. I actually had one very similar but it recently fell off its stand and broke while I was away on business.
It had a tree in it but that could have been switched.
