Pine candles
I have a 5-needle Japanese White Pine. I was growing well, putting out candles on all branches. Seemingly over night, the candles went from green to brown and started falling off. Any ideas regarding the cause and possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Carolee,
Sounds like a bout of Pine tip bore to me. They do their damage this time of the year. It's a moth that lays it's eggs in the soft new candle and starts to much, munch, munch!!!!! Use of a systemic insecticide will help. It's a good idea to keep the yearly cycle in mind and make sure and apply the insecticde in late May or Early June to get a jump on the egg lay'n cycle.
