To me, it looks like a shrub of the genus Ribes (blackcurrant, redcurrant, whitecurrant,...).
Since it was collected in the wild the New World, it might be Ribes americanum (Wild Black Currant). Have a look here :

But if there are gardens around, it may also be a variety of flowering Ribes (like Ribes sanguineum) from seeds carried by birds : I have several in my garden that came here this way...

This plant back buds like crazy, is quite bendable, and the leaves are nice and small, so I was hoping to learn/practice with it...
Can this species be a viable candidate for a bonsai someday?
