My Carpinus coreana progression............
Here is my Korean Hornbeam that I acquired from New England Bonsai in Massachusetts back in 2006. I have basically used the clip and grow method with the exception of a few key branches. I got it as a newbie in bonsai so we have progressed together. I know it has a long way to go but it has given my much joy! I am having trouble however trying to find the right pot for it...........any suggestions????
Thanks............rick

Hi Rick,
Have you repotted this tree since 2006? What do the roots look like below soil level? I would look into planting it higher in the pot with the right side raised; but that all depends on the roots. Also, since the curved left trunk is a permanent feature, this tree might have potential planted in the RIGHT rock - Penjing, animal type of planting. I can see a bird type creature - by raising the right side and having the left curved trunk hang down more I can see a Phoenix in the making... at this stage it is a stretch of the imagination.
Nice tree!
Best, Todd

Hi Todd,
Thank you, yes this tree was repotted last year. I had a large crescent pot for it with the exact idea you mentioned. I was going to raise the right end and have the left lower, that is why i trained the two main branches (hard to see) to slope downward. But the pot wasnt large
enough. The tree had good roots but not good nebari. This is the left side, or back as i like to call it. It is an odd shaped tree. I thought that this end would fit well into a large "cement like" crescent pot.

Hi Yvonne,
Thank you for your suggestion. I agree this tree has many, many styling problems but I dont think I could be that aggressive. This tree may never be good bonsai but I still enjoy it.

Hello Ricky - it looks absolutely lovely to me, for whatever that is worth. Do you have a few more present shots of it, maybe from a few different angles?
...and...still not a pot suggestion from any of us!

Thank you. Here are a few other angles. Many issues, but "it is what it is!"
