when you tilted the pot in the last photo you and I was immediately thinking the same thing. I thought maybe style it in a father-son stye with the crazy top twiggy growth of the father/main trunk cut back to that middle grouping of twigs, us that middle as your apex, style the other trunk as jin or as a smaller second tree. But yeah definately a tough piece to work with, but cool looking and worth he trouble. Or maybe even a split trunk in the middle between the two???

Losing the top is a good idea. It will induce taper and eliminate to some extent, the rather straight top portion of the tree. You have put green on the dead branch though.
