Hi guys!
I'm wondering about any alternatives for feeding maples (was using biogold so far). Has anybody used any product available on the UK/Ireland market that has proved effective at affordable prices?
Regards
Marcin

I gave up on Biogold a few years ago. Far too expensive and not environmentally friendly in that it has to be transported so far. I now use pelleted chicken manure, B&Q organic pellets, Phostrogen, Miracid and whatever else I happen to have available. All my trees are just as healthy as before.

Mine grow like crazy using chempak no 2. It's cheap and easy to come by. Easy to buy online and most of my local nurseries have it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I presume you guys would go rather with a high nitrogen than balanced formulas?

If it's high Nitrogen you're after try Wilkinsons liquid lawn feed. £1.99 a litre. Had excellent results with it last year. Not too sure what other people would think though, I have a feeling it would be frowned upon! Last year my neighbour was throwing away a potted Pyracantha which had barely grown for several years, I took it off him and fed it on the Wilko lawn feed and it's now a picture of health!

There's a lot of mystique floating around about fertilizing. I'll say it again, plants don't care how you give them their NPK and trace elements, they just want you to give it to them. ANY fertilizer that has a more-or-less balanced amount of NPK and comes with the necessary trace elements (read the label!) is fine for your trees.

Japanese fertilizer is just as good as UK or America fertilizer -- and vice versa. If you like to spend a lot of money on fertilizer purchase your biogolds, and stuff with kanji on the bottle or package. Otherwise, your corner nursery has stuff that's just fine.

The very minor excepetion to this is when you're trying to promote blooms or are feeding ericaceous (acid demanding) plants. In those cases, buy fertilizers -- at your corner nursery -- that emphasize the nutrients required for those.

But, frankly, a balanced fertilizer does pretty well there, too. Plants tend to take what they need when they need it and ignoe the rest.

Anything else you read about the "proper" fertilizer is pure marketing hype.
