worked on thinning and reducing the heavy canopy of a small shimpaku. this work will proceed in stages, keeping the health of the tree in mind. today's work was limited to some pinching and branch removal. the original foliage has been reduced in bulk by 1/4. now the canopy is much smaller and tighter - more in keeping with a tree with significant jin. after a good rest, a few more branches will be pruned to further lighten the top and pinching will continue.
at some point, a small shari will be created in the upper trunk to define the nice movement. when the tree is next repotted, it will be repositioned to lean more toward the viewer and inclined to the left.
