Quick question, how does one go about creating such buttressed bases on these trees?

Ryan, root work from the start and repeated frequently. Usually but not always, there are several cuttings or seedlings used to fuse the base and from there it's just grow and cut Smile

Thank you Gary! Is it the same kind of idea as Doug Philips did, minus the big carved wooden log?

I have a Trident, but it is very, very, very far from anything even bonsai related.

Thank you Sam, Gm and Mach5 for your nice compliment.
Gary, Thanks for your info.Very good. Another method, you just chop the maple down into stump and develope the new trunk.
See this Trident maple.

Suthin, as always, very good work! When developing stock, I think most are afraid to grow and afraid to cut Smile

Hi Suthin, down here in Australia we don't have wild mountains to collect conifers from, our wild areas are desert, that means we mostly grow bonsai from scratch. To me 6 years is pretty quick you must be a very good horticulturalist as well as a designer. Did you grow the base as well ?

Sutin your work is in the league of Kimura. Just want to know how many years it took you to create such nice maples and do u defoliate more than ones in a growing season. When do you wire and do you cut back hard every year. Thanks and post some more trees.

Hey Suthin, Amazing and very inspiring work. I missed you last year in Raleigh at TBS and I hope you'll come back early next year. To sweeten the deal I can offer you a pretty good discount at a Marriott hotel. Smile

Can you post a picture of your broom style trident maple in development?
Thanks and have a great week

Thank you Andre for nice compliment . I defoliate the Maple one a year only on healthy tree in Jun and wring in the winter. I cut back hard every 5-6 years.
Here is a shohin Japanese Maple by air layer. Hope you like it.
