Ashville arboretum bonsai
Jim Lewis took me to the Ashville Arboretum and we saw some really fine bonsai. I was particularly struck by the mixed plantings, and even more struck when I took a walk in Hendersonville later and saw that bonsai duplicated in the wild.

That's what bonsai is all about! Great pictures! Are the living trees in the bonsai a spruce species?
Thanks, Todd

That is nice how real it does look. How big is the display?

It's not very big. The pot may be 12-14 inches wide.
Here's a picture of the planting in the spring -- it is called "Mt. Mitchell," which is a nearby mountain top in the Blue Ridge Mountains where the NC Arboretum is nestled. The flowering plant in the back is, I think, an azalea.
To provide some scale, the small black labels are about 5 inches wide. Maybe 6.
And remember, come to the Carolina Bonsai Expo Oct. 10-11 and you can see this and many others from the Arboretum's collection in its permanent display area -- PLUS an indoor display of trees from a dozen clubs from NC and neighboring states. It's free (though there's a $6 parking charge for non-arboretum members).

Nina,
Are you going to be at the show? or did you completely miss it by going too early?

Oh, Dale! If I had known you would be there, I would have stayed a week longer!
