Amazonida,

When exhibiting a ficus, leaves are usually cut about two (2) weeks before the show. By then new- small bud points have developed. This is necessary to show the vitality of a tree. If not so, it might look sick to the judges.

Defoliation has many uses, including the reason you mention.

I really like the structure of the tree and the nebari. You can feel the power and the movement of this fine specimen. The branch ramification is outrages!! To achieve something like this takes time and a lot of word work. But it must be really gratifying.

Thanks for the comments. No, Lao Tze had no trees in the exhibition, but several of his students displayed their works.
