I just put it in the post - Royal Snail second class. You should get it by October and if you're lucky it won't have gone completely off by then. Well done. A worthy winner.

Fiona,

The main difference between Lucas' and Pavel's designs [apart of the Photoshop work Very Happy ] is the positioning of the foliage with/ against the trunk movement. Pavel's is more balanced and natural to me.
Besides, after you make your choice and complete finish with the foliage design, I think you'll need to fine tune the jins, especially the lower branch of the left one and the inner "finger" of the bottom-right.
I think it is great when one have a tree with some options, and yours is on its way to a masterpiece.

Did a styling on it yesterday and today as it was too miserable weather to do much else.

I have been "brave" of sorts and have attempted to be true to Pavel's virt. As it is, the foliage is pretty much all at the end of branches so taking it in as close to the trunk as per the virt will take a bit more growing. I have also kept some extra foliage on it as I wanted a security net in case of mishaps with branches.

It's significantly different to what I had envisaged two years ago, but I must say I am pretty much happy with the result. There's still a lot of bulking out and repositioning, but it's well on its way.

And apologies to Pavel as I promised him I wouldn't tinker with it too much over the summer. Sorry Pavel I'm a woman - when did we ever do what we were told?

Right I'm away to do other "woman" things such as find it essential to vacuum while the football is on and unnecessarily move furniture around just because I fancy a change. Evil or Very Mad

Just realised I should have reduce the higher jin at the left side, and I think the drooping one at the rear needs to go as well.

I think it looks much better like that.

Maybe now you should leave it alone until next year, it would be a pity to over-stress it. It looks great as it is.

We have a saying that goes something like "'Better' is worse than 'good'" Wink

Brava Fiona! I love it... I was betting you'd take Pavel's virt while I was reading through... it spoke to my heart the most... it's just a riveting image. Can't wait to watch it evolve. Smile

How it looks today.

I now have a decision to make as the jin (which was already weak) succumbed to our early winter storms last year and broke off completely.
The choice is to go with or without the jin. Pavel's virtual was designed around the jin and wouldn't work particularly well without it. Yet as I am not able to get the foliage placed exactly as it was in the virt, perhaps now is the time to do a design modification around not having a jin.

My initial reaction is that there is enough other deadwood to carry the idea previously put forward in this thread of the tree having suffered some sort of lightning strike. Your thoughts are very welcome. Please note I will be reducing the foliage even further.

Without the jin:

With the jin (it's only resting there - it isn't actually fixed):

I think it looks fine without the jin. That's an unbiased view, since I'm pretty sure I haven't seen this thread before (and haven't seen the virtual you're referring to).

The thread is nearly two years old - pretty much the timescale I'd set to let the tree recover after the heavy work it had back then. I'm aiming to get the tree into its final pot next spring, which is why I'm doing a bit more this year that the simple trim it had last summer.

Pavel's virt is on page 2 but here it is again:

As I said, the jin was an intrinsic part of that design.

Thanks for re-posting the virt...still think it works very well without the jin. I may even prefer it that way.

100x better without the jin at the top. It would still look good glued on to the other side of the tree though, and angled down............

I actually can't quite picture that. If you have any spare time a rough virt would be most appreciated.
