Acer Palmatum late bloomer?
I have a couple of Japanese Maples and this is my first spring with them. So far I do not see any leaves on them, but there are buds aplenty. Do they typically leaf later in the season?
Thanks,

It would help if we knew where you were from, Ed. You might fill out your profile . . .
Anyway, here on the border between zone 7 and 8 my maples are barely starting to show leaf.

Mmmm. Well, I'd say your maples should have leafed out by now. Do I assume you are a barber -- or something more dangerous? <g>

I also am going through my first Spring with my Trident Maples, and they are just beginning to produce leaves.
I live in the Southern California town of Ojai (about 60 mi north of LA), and we've had an unusually cold winter here. This last week we were down into the upper 30's at night and mid 60's during the day. I guess the key is patience...

My tridents haven't started bud swelling after 3 weeks above 80 during the day. No worries they'll leaf.

Jim, no I'm not a barber. I am something more dangerous... to myself. I'm a straight razor enthusiast. I collect, restore, and customize straight razors. Oh yes, and shave with them.
Yes, I think I just have to be patient. I scratched a trunk to make sure that it is still alive. Yup, she's green. I'm sure it will pop any week now.

Nightime temps are very important. In So Cal Zone 9 almost at the border de Mexico, still leaves are barely unfurling. Very late this year and our day temps have been warm but night cool.
We can plan and Enjoy the extra time to get early birds (elms etc) repotted, eh?
Mine go Elms , Quince, Ume, Feb 10th ,Pome, fig, Bald Cypress, March 1st, Still waiting on Zelcova. black pine buds are slow to move this year, just now about half inch high. Hang in there
