ALT. and REC.ARTS.BONSAI
For those of you who have been around these silly machines for a few years and can recall back to the pre-graphics, pre-WWW days and to when we communicated via all-text e-mail or newsgroups, you may be surprised to learn that the USENET newsgroups alt.bonsai and rec.arts.bonsai are still alive and functioning. I won't say "alive and well," because they're not, but they're still there. (There are a few French (and italian???) language newsgroups, too, but I can't speak to their viability.)
And if you wonder why we don't get the my Serissa is dying messages anymore it is because they're all going to rec.arts.bonsai -- along with thousands of message headers that just say "test" (I used to hate those!) and others that are peddling everything from sex to crap on e-bay. Alt.Bonsai is filled with drivvel and dreck.
I made this "discovery" as I was adding a paragraph to update the IBC History for the upcming addition to the New IBC.
At one time, the IBC mailing list and rec.arts.bonsai were linked and very popular and useful. Now, the folks using rec.arts.bonsai merely seem lost.
Iris, do you still visit RAB? I know you stuck with them a long, long time.

I will treasure those days. Remember the Haikumatic? And the Andy Walsh/Persiano flame wars? I learned an incredible amount in those days.

Yes. Hud's Haikumatic was something to anticipate when it appeared. Hud is still around in California (Google!) but I don't know if he's doing bonsai. I miss him, Andy, Sandy, and yes IASNOB -- along with many others: including Mike Bartalone (the REAL father of the IBC).
I wonder if it might have been because we were text only. We could show no "gee whiz" trees. We were all pretty much equal on the bonsai front, so we could talk about it. (That was where we first demolished the "water-drop-burning-leaves" idiocy -- and Andy presented incontrovertible information on the lack of virtues of "Stuporthrive" (that convinced most everyone but Michael, as I recall).
