Re: Katsura Maple
I know that Chicago can have harsh winters, but Katsura is one of the first maple cultivars to leaf out.
Mine (USDA zone have been in full leaf for two weeks... Have you noticed any unusual coloration on the bark, or checked if the buds are still alive ?

Some bark is green, some dark red. A few ends look like they might have died off. The buds might have swollen slightly but I can't tell on this tree. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Katsura Maple
I have grown A. p. Katsura ever since I started in bonsai, and they have always started growing vigorously by now, even here in Toronto.
How did you winter the tree? I suspect that the roots of your tree may not have made it through the winter.

I store my trees in an unheated shed. I put them in tubs and surround the pots with mulch.

Late Katsura
I've got a container grown katsura here in the Chicago area and I was pretty surprised to see it breaking buds in my (cold) basement the first week of March. All the leaves have been out now for a good 3 weeks. If yours isn't showing vigorous signs of life, you've probably lost some or all the roots as Reiner said.

Re: Katsura Maple
I haven't checked the roots as I am still hoping, although I did give the tree a good tug. But that isn't necessarily an indicator of anything at this time. Thanks.

Re: Katsura Maple
The tree has small hard buds but the bark has begun to change color from green to a reddish color. I think its a goner.
